The Early Years
Cordae Dunston, professionally known as Cordae, was born on August 26, 1997, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Growing up, he moved around a lot due to his mother’s job as a teacher, living in places like Maryland and New Jersey. It was during his time in Maryland that Cordae discovered his love for music, starting to write rhymes and record songs at the age of 15.
After graduating high school, Cordae attended Towson University in Maryland for a year before dropping out to pursue his music career full-time. He moved to Los Angeles, California, where he met fellow rapper and producer, YBN Nahmir, and joined the YBN collective in 2018.
In May 2018, Cordae released his debut single, “My Name Is”, which quickly gained attention on SoundCloud and YouTube. He followed up with his first mixtape, “Anxiety”, in July 2018, which features collaborations with Chance the Rapper and fellow YBN members.
However, it was Cordae’s solo track, “Kung Fu”, that truly put him on the map. The song went viral on social media and caught the attention of major labels, eventually leading to Cordae signing with Atlantic Records in early 2019.
The Lost Boy
Cordae’s debut studio album, “The Lost Boy”, was released on July 26, 2019, to critical acclaim. The album features appearances from Anderson .Paak, Pusha T, and Meek Mill, and includes hit singles like “RNP” and “Bad Idea”.
“The Lost Boy” was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2020 Grammy Awards, solidifying Cordae’s place as one of the most promising young talents in the industry.
